Completing a Minor

Taubman College undergraduate students may elect one or more minors offered by departments and programs throughout the University. Electing to earn a minor is optional for all architecture students and for urban technology students admitted in Fall 2025 or later. There is no limit to the number of minors a student may elect. Students who declare and complete an approved minor will receive a notation on their student transcript but not on their diploma.

How do I complete the minor requirements?

You’ll want to follow the expectations of your particular minor and plan to check in with your minor advisor approximately once a semester (even if it’s not required), especially around registration time. This will help you make informed decisions when selecting courses and ensure you are making progress towards completing minor requirements.

If you encounter any issues registering for a course that counts towards your minor, contact the unit that is offering the course to determine their process for course permissions, waitlist, etc. (i.e. for a FIN course, contact Ross).

I’m in my last minor course, what do I do next?

At the end of your minor (this may be in your final semester or earlier if you’re able to complete the requirements more quickly), you’ll complete a Minor Release process with your minor advisor. This will officially confirm the courses that will count towards your minor and provide Student Affairs with the documentation necessary to approve your minor when you’re ready to graduate.

Counting credits between my major and minor

The general rules for Taubman College students pursuing minors are:

  1. Students may not elect the pass/fail option for courses included in a minor.
  2. A department or program may include courses that are grades on a credit/no credit basis in a minor, but all other courses in the minor must be taken for a grade.
  3. Courses elected to meet the requirements of a minor may also be part of the student’s distribution requirements.
  4. A maximum of one course may be shared between the requirements of a minor and a major.
  5. A maximum of one course may be shared between the requirements of two minors (i.e. Taubman College students can count FIN 302 toward a minor in Real Estate Development and a minor in Business).
  6. Test credits may not be used to meet the requirements of a minor, but they may be used to meet prerequisites to the minor.
  7. Taubman College students must abide by LSA minor policies when enrolled in an LSA-administered minor.
