Policy
Taubman College is committed to managing staff workloads and schedules in a way that supports effective operations while minimizing the need for overtime.
Non-exempt employees must receive pre-approval from their supervisor before working overtime. Overtime should be limited to situations where it is necessary to meet operational needs and cannot reasonably be avoided through workload or schedule adjustments
When feasible, supervisors and employees may adjust an employee’s schedule within the same workweek to accommodate operational needs and avoid overtime. For example, an employee who works later than their regular schedule one day may adjust their start or end time on another day, with advance supervisor approval. Employees must accurately report all hours worked.
Recurring or significant overtime should prompt the supervisor to review workload, priorities, staffing, and other available solutions rather than relying on ongoing overtime.
Procedure
Supervisors should:
- Approve overtime in advance.
- Consider schedule adjustments, workload redistribution, or other alternatives before approving overtime.
- Ensure non-exempt employees accurately report all hours worked.
- Consult HR when overtime is recurring, significant, or raises questions about an employee’s classification or work schedule.
Employees should:
- Obtain supervisor approval before working overtime.
- Accurately record all hours worked.
- Communicate with their supervisor when workload or operational needs may require additional hours.
