Per university guidelines, volunteering refers to donating time with an organization whose primary purpose is charitable or humanitarian in nature, without remuneration or any other type of compensation. Based on these guidelines, we are not able to utilize students or recent graduates as volunteers for duties that are not part of a defined volunteer program (for which we have none at Taubman College) or for work that the college commonly compensates other individuals for performing. This includes research support and applies to individuals in OPT status as well. These standards apply regardless of whether it is an individual inquiring or the supervisor. This practice is in place to comply with the university volunteer guidelines, the college’s internal standard practice, and to prevent students and recent graduates from working without compensation. If you have any questions about this policy, please reach out to taubmancollegehr@umich.edu. If you have someone that you would like to hire, please review the temporary employee processing information.
