Student Conference Travel Grant Application

The College supports the dissemination of completed or substantially completed peer-reviewed work, including conference and exhibition participation. These funds are available to MArch and BS students. For conference travel, the College is able to support one accepted conference per student per fiscal year (July 1 – June 30) as available funds permit.

This program mirrors the requirements and funding framework of the Rackham Conference Travel Grant program (which is not available to Architecture students).

Eligibility

Taubman MArch and BS College students are eligible to apply for the Taubman College Student Conference Travel Grant award if:

  • The student is in good academic standing in a Taubman College MArch or BS program [Rackham students in the MS, MUD, MUP, and PhD programs should apply to the Rackham program]
  • The student has responded to a formal call for abstracts.
  • The student has been accepted to present a poster or paper at a conference.

Deadline

Ongoing. Complete applications, including the letter of recommendation, must be received before the first day of the conference. Decisions are usually made within a week of receipt of a complete application.

Award Description

A student is eligible to receive one travel grant award (either domestic or international, but not both) during a fiscal year, which runs from July 1 to June 30, based on the start date of the conference. The conference must take place while still enrolled as a student at U-M.

For students who qualify for need-based financial aid (including the child care subsidy), receipt of this Rackham award may reduce the original loan amount or subsidy. Please contact the U-M Office of Financial Aid for help evaluating your individual circumstances.

Application Process

Requests for Student Conference Travel Grant support should submit an application using this form, and should submit the following attachments:

  • Copy of the confirmation of presentation (email is acceptable) with the applicant’s name clearly listed as a presenter or performer to verify the student’s acceptance to participate in the conference.
  • Recommendation letter from the faculty advisor or department chair describing how the conference participation is relevant to the student’s research or studies (1p max).
  • A budget (budget template link) regarding the amount of funding requested and a list of the specific expenses (incl documentation for estimates) covered by the award.

Funding covers airfare (economy/coach), ground transportation, conference registration (early bird rates only), and reasonable hotel rates during the conference period only. Per diem for food and extended accommodation is not covered by the College. Travel will adhere to U-M / Rackham guidelines and International Travel Restriction policies.

Students are requested to be prompt in submitting requests immediately following conference paper acceptance. Funds cannot be provided to students who are unable to attend the proposed events. Recipients are required to contact taubmancollegeresearch@umich.edu if, for any reason, you are unable to travel.
