Reporting Obligations
Certain university administrators, supervisors, and employees in designated roles (including resident advisers and human resources staff) are classified as Individuals with Reporting Obligations (IROs). IROs have specific responsibilities under university policy and are required to report any information they receive about possible sexual or gender-based misconduct to the Equity, Civil Rights & Title IX office (ECRT).
IROs should inform individuals of their reporting obligation before they share information about possible sexual or gender-based misconduct. This allows individuals to make informed decisions about what they wish to disclose.
IROs may provide this notice in one or more of the following ways:
- Email signature: Include a statement such as: “I am an Individual with Reporting Obligations (IRO), which means I am obligated to share, with the Equity, Civil Rights & Title IX office (ECRT), any information disclosed to me about: sexual assault, sexual and gender-based harassment, intimate partner violence, stalking, retaliation, and violation of protective measures.”
- Verbal notice: Before an individual shares information, explain that you are an IRO and are required to report information about possible sexual or gender-based misconduct to the university
Individuals seeking confidential support can be directed to the Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center (SAPAC) Crisis Line at (734) 936-3333 or SAPAC@umich.edu, available 24/7.
IROs should submit reports through the ECRT online reporting form, including their name and contact information. Reporting to ECRT helps ensure that individuals receive consistent information about available resources and the formal complaint process.
