As part of U-M’s commitment to a respectful and inclusive workplace, all employees are required to complete training modules on cultivating a culture of respect, reporting sexual and gender-based misconduct, building a culture that thrives, and discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. All modules can be found below.
Sexual Harassment and Gender-Based Conduct
The sexual and gender-based misconduct policy prohibits sexual assault, sexual and gender-based harassment, sexual exploitation, sex and/or gender-based stalking, intimate partner violence, sex/gender-based discrimination, retaliation, and violations of supportive measures related to misconduct allegations.
Education & Training
- Cultivating a Culture of Respect: Sexual Harassment and Misconduct
- A mandatory training module for all faculty and staff that provides strategies for recognizing, preventing, and addressing sexual harassment and misconduct in the university environment.
- If you would like to learn more, additional training modules can be found on the sexual and gender-based misconduct reporting & resources page.
Reporting
You can find information about the reporting process at U-M on the U-M Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct Reporting and Processing page.
If you experience or witness discrimination or harassment, you can report it to the university directly through the Expect Respect Portal.
If you are not sure if the conflict or behavior you experience is considered discrimination or harassment, the university has many institutional resources to guide you through that process. A comprehensive list of University-wide resources can be found here.
Individuals with Reporting Obligations
Certain university administrators, supervisors, and employees in designated roles (including resident advisers and human resources staff) are classified as Individuals with Reporting Obligations (IROs). IROs are required to report any information they receive about possible sexual or gender-based misconduct to the Equity, Civil Rights & Title IX office (ECRT).
Education & Training
- Reporting Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct at Michigan
- A mandatory training module that helps members of the University community to determine whether they are Individuals with Reporting Obligations (IROs) under the Policy on Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct. In addition, it offers guidance on how to identify, respond to, and report incidents of sexual and gender-based misconduct in accordance with U-M policies.
- If you are an IRO, please let people know you are in one or more of the following ways:
- Include a disclaimer in your email signature
- “I am an Individual with Reporting Obligations (IRO), which means I am obligated to share, with the Office for Institutional Equity, any information disclosed to me about: Sexual Assault | Sexual/Gender-Based Harassment | Intimate Partner Violence | Stalking | Retaliation | Violation of Protective Measures.”
- Verbally alert an individual who may be seeking support that you are a mandated reporter before they confide in you so they have the power to make a decision given your obligation to file a report with the university.
- Include a disclaimer in your email signature
You can always direct an individual to the Sexual Assault Prevention and Assistance Center (SAPAC) Crisis Line at (734) 936 3333 or SAPAC@umich.edu to receive confidential support 24/7.
Reporting
By sharing information with ECRT, IROs help ensure that every individual who reports sexual misconduct receives consistent information about available resources and the formal complaint process. Reports should be submitted through this online form, and must include the IRO’s name and contact information.
Building a Culture that Thrives

- Building a Culture that Thrives: Preventing Retaliation
- A mandatory training module that equips employees with the knowledge to recognize and prevent retaliation, fostering a supportive and fair workplace for all.
