Per university guidelines, volunteering refers to donating time with an organization whose primary purpose is charitable or humanitarian in nature, without remuneration or any other type of compensation. Please note before you allow someone to volunteer for you at the college, that if the tasks an individual will be doing are consistent with tasks you’d pay a temporary or regular employee to perform, that individual should also be paid. These standards apply regardless of if it is an individual inquiring or the supervisor. If the tasks this person intends to do are typically covered by a grant, please contact the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (“ORSP”) at orsp-info@umich.edu. Lastly, if volunteering involves an international student, please refer to the International Center regarding volunteer guidelines.
