Location: Room 2222, Art and Architecture Building Time: 12:00PM Lecture & Panel Discussion: Ukraine Reconstruction The Russian War against Ukraine ruins the cities and rich architectural heritage, monuments, and urban space. The lives of all Ukrainians have been jeopardized by this war that continues to brutally consume Ukrainian lives and territory. Over 6 million internally displaced people need affordable housing. While the rebuilding of Ukraine must be Ukrainian-led, it must be supported by an international community of expertise, funding resources, and conveyed with respect to the self-determination of the Ukrainian people. The seminar Ukraine Reconstruction aims to discuss the current situation of damages of cities, architectural heritage and housing, thus convenes a keynote speaker and a panel of experts on topics of urbanism, architecture, cultural heritage. Location: Lecture Hall 2104, Art and Architecture Building Time: 12:00PM – 9:00PM FRIDAY, MARCH 29 Urban Planning Ph.D. careers beyond academia: From local governments to the UNHCR This two-part event focuses on URP Ph.D. alumni who have gone on to non-academic career paths. In Panel 1, alumni will offer 8-minute talks about their career paths and current work, ranging from leadership in local governments to working for the United Nations. Panel 2 will ask alumni to reflect on how their doctoral training transferred to a non-academic career path and to offer advice on finding and thriving in non-academic jobs. After the desk crits, pin-ups, and reviews, after all the talking, all that remains of design efforts in school are the drawings (or some type of representation). While there are no “real” results (i.e., no buildings built), successful studio projects in the form of their expression reveal the effort, intelligence, and possibilities entailed within their conception. “SHOW…don’t tell. Architecture Awards Exhibition 2023-24” celebrates the product of design studios as indexical artifacts of intention, and includes the work of students in studios throughout the Architecture Program at Taubman College, including Bachelor of Science in Architecture, Master of Architecture, Master of Urban Design, Master of Science in Architecture Digital and Material Technologies, as well as the Bachelor of Science in Urban Technology. The prize winners will be announced at this awards luncheon Location: CMKY, Art and Architecture Building Time: 12:00PM SATURDAY, MARCH 30 fætures worldbuilding workshop With Alina Nazmeeva & John David Wagner In this workshop, participants will play a worldbuilding game fætures. Playing this tabletop card game, participants are invited to creatively envision speculative worlds through modes of collective brainstorming and individual imagination. The game enables work independently but never in isolation from the team, and everyone at the table has the same power to shape the world. Individuals are encouraged to think, design, and world-build outside of the box and go off the beaten path. fætures is intended to aid designers, writers, creatives, educators, strategists, creatives and students brainstorm and ideate worlds and entanglements in speculative scenarios. No prior experience needed. Participants do not need to bring computers. Snacks and beverages will be provided. Register here. This year’s theme, “Frameworks,” focuses on collaborative projects, essential structures, and making fun! This event is free; all Taubman students, faculty, staff, and guests are cordially invited, and costumes or formal attire are encouraged.
