Continuity of Instruction for Students with Revoked Visas

We recognize the challenges faced by our international students in maintaining their educational progression and are committed to providing the necessary support to mitigate the impact on their academic journey where possible. Taking a tailored, case-by-case approach allows us to respond thoughtfully and directly to those students affected by visa revocations with the goal of minimizing disruption to their academic careers.

Each situation will be assessed individually, considering the following factors:

  1. Immigration Compliance and Risk Assessment
    • What is the nature of the visa revocation?
    • What recommendations have been provided by the International Center?
    • Is the student from a currently embargoed country?
  2. Academic Feasibility
    • Which degree is the student pursuing?
    • What is the student’s current academic standing?
    • What is remaining in the current term?
  3. Individualized Plans
    • What immediate needs and overall goals are there to address?
    • Is remote instruction/participation possible?
  4. Technological and Logistical Considerations
    • What are the financial and enrollment implications?
    • Is immigration reinstatement possible?
  5. Communication Protocols
    • How will regular communication be maintained?
  6. Evaluation, Equity and Academic Integrity
    • Is the initial plan meeting the needs of the student and program?
    • How do we need to adapt for this and potential future cases?

Every student and case is unique. It’s essential that we address each individual circumstance by balancing a commitment to academic access while complying with federal regulations and maintaining the standards of each degree program, and students, faculty, and academic leadership will work with the Director of Student Affairs (kjmcdono@umich.edu) to do so.
